Understanding Specialty Coffee

Why is the timing right for trade innovation in specialty coffee?

Growing volatility has seen stakeholders across the coffee industry facing major risks, leading many into bankruptcy. Today’s market is uniquely suited to bring about change and innovation into green coffee trade and logistics.

What is the difference between fair trade and direct trade?

Fair trade is a certification system that ensures producers are paid fairly and that products are produced in a sustainable way. Direct trade is a sourcing practice that focuses on building a direct relationship between a producer and a buyer. In our case, we are letting producers set farm-gate pricing based on what they articulate they need. We also facilitate negotiation between the buying and selling parties.

What do you mean by cohesion across the supply chain?

Bridging Tables facilitates money movement across the supply chain in such a way that allows producers to nurture their businesses and employees; service providers to focus on core services related to coffee processing and movement; and roasters to invest in best practices with fewer financing worries.

Ordering Samples

How do I order green coffee samples?

You can request samples by browsing our marketplace and selecting “Request Samples” on any available green coffee you might be interested in. A form will appear; you’ll want to submit one form for each sample. If you’ve never ordered from us before, you will need to provide some additional details about yourself, your business, and shipping information. Remember to keep cookie tracking on to improve the sample ordering process.

Please note that sample fulfillment is subject to availability. Our team carefully reviews each request and may reach out to learn more before moving forward. Due to the nature of forward contracting, sample inventory is limited; orders are fulfilled as received and may become unavailable. In some cases, additional samples may be procured from origin.

If you are browsing the marketplace and not finding what you need, please reach out  and one of our team members will be happy to assist you.

Do you charge for green coffee samples?

We provide up to five free green coffee samples at a time. To receive more, we ask you first provide feedback on any outstanding samples. To submit feedback or request an exception, please reach out and one of our team members will be happy to assist you.

How long will it take for my green coffee samples to arrive?

Once your sample request is approved, we process and ship samples within 2–3 business days. Delivery times vary based on your location but typically range from 3–7 business days.

Do you want cupping feedback on samples?

Yes! We highly encourage cupping feedback as it helps us better understand your preferences and improve our selection. Submitting feedback also unlocks your ability to request additional samples. You can share feedback through our contact form

Contracting Green Coffee

Do you offer financing?

Yes. Our financing partnerships and joint venture allow us access to a $100M revolving credit, enabling us to provide credit to roasters and importers. If you are a roaster interested in financing a particular coffee, you can learn more here. If you are an importer interested in partnering to access our financing, you can learn more here.

I don’t understand forward contracting, can you explain why it’s different and innovative?

Costs to produce specialty coffee vary across growing regions but are impacted and “normalized” by the commodities market (for now, at least). Forward contracting aligns the value of specialty coffee (unique Arabica varietals grown) with market demand, decoupling this unique produce from the commodity market, which is driven by the price of Robusta produced by mechanized farming in Brazil and Vietnam.

How long will it take for my green coffee to arrive in a United States warehouse once I sign a forward contract?

Great question. From harvest to arrival in a warehouse of your choosing, we’d estimate anywhere from six weeks to six months. Timing depends on the processing method, milling, storage, export/import logistics and when in the harvest season the coffee was sampled.

Due to this variability, it’s important to source from a variety of different coffee growing regions (we do!) and understand the variability of harvest dates.

Did you know, for example, Nepalese coffee is harvested between January and April while El Salvadorian coffee is harvested April through November? At any time of year throughout the coffee-producing world, there’s always green coffee being harvested somewhere.

No matter where you source from, we do our best to provide estimated delivery timelines based on your specific coffee’s origins and destination. We will also keep you informed as the coffee is in transit and are willing to provide up-to-date information about the coffee at any time.

We believe the future of specialty coffee depends on forward contracting produce close to harvest time and we are here to help you source coffee this way. Please reach out to one of our coffee sourcing experts to learn more.

Do you have any green coffee available today?

Yes, we do. To learn more about coffee available to sample or contract, please visit our marketplace. If you see something you like and it’s not available OR if you want a particular kind of coffee and don’t see it, please contact us. We have an enormous network of producers and can likely find what you’re looking for.

What happens if I cannot fill a container?

Bridging Tables is committed to bringing like minded coffee producers and roasters together for a more durable trade. This may mean at times we can connect you, the roaster, to other like minded roasters to share in a pre-financed container of coffee. Each contract can be unique to your needs. Together we are able to build and aggregate loads of green coffee as a winning solution for many. Speak to sales about forming your own buying group or joining one in your area!

How do I know when my green coffee is available?

Once your contracted green coffee lands in a United States warehouse and is ready for you, we will notify you and send a landed sample for approval. You can then begin submitting purchase orders to schedule deliveries.

Purchase Orders, Warehousing, Payments

How do I place an order for the green coffee?

To place an order, you must have an active contract in place with us. If you’d like to order green coffee and do not have a contract, please reach out to us and our team will help you get started.

For customers with active contracts in place, submit a purchase order by reaching out to cs@bridgingtables.com. Our team will review the order within 48 hours and begin processing.

What is the minimum order size you will accept?

As a minimum, we recommend ordering a full pallet (10 bags) when possible as this is most cost effective for you. Greatest cost savings come when multiple pallets are released at once.

What payment methods do you accept for green coffee purchase orders?

We kindly request payment via ACH transfer. Details on how to make a payment are provided with each invoice. Other payment methods, including credit cards, digital wallets, and checks may be accepted on a case by case basis, however, a processing fee will be added to your invoice.

If you are a new customer, you will need to pay up front for your first three purchase orders.

Does Bridging Tables provide storage for green coffee in the United States?

Yes, we partner with climate controlled warehouses around the United States to ensure optimal storage conditions and preserve green coffee quality. We are constantly expanding our warehouse footprint, so if we are not in your area let us know your preferred storage location and we will do our best to start an account.

Does Bridging Tables coordinate shipping from the United States warehouse to my location?

Yes, Bridging Tables will coordinate shipping for you. Upon submitting a purchase order you will be asked to provide delivery information including your delivery address, contact information, and any specific delivery instructions for us to effectively coordinate. We will work to find you a competitive rate, which will be added to your invoice.

Can I arrange my own shipping from the United States warehouse to my location?

Yes, you can arrange your own shipping by electing so on the purchase order. Once your purchase order is submitted to us, we will review and request a release from the warehouse. Next, we will notify you of the pick up date, time, and reference number. Lastly,  we ask you to send us a copy of the shipper’s Bill of Lading (BOL) for us to confirm the details with the warehouse.

Once I place a purchase order, when will my green coffee order be shipped?

Our team works quickly to process your order within 48 hours of receipt (Monday-Friday, excluding Holidays). Shipping times can vary due to our partnerships with multiple warehouses and shipping companies. We typically see product ships anywhere from 1-4 business days after your order has been processed.

How does the green coffee come packaged?

Green coffee is typically packaged in 60kg (132lb), 69kg (152lb), or 70kg (154lb) bags, depending on the origin. The green coffee is shipped to you wrapped and strapped on wooden 48″x40″ pallets containing up to 10 bags each.

What should I do when the delivery arrives?

Before signing for the delivery, please thoroughly inspect the pallet and bags to ensure there is no damage and the quantity, origin, and lot numbers match the order documentation before signing. Please contact us immediately if you see any issues.

What do I do if my order arrives damaged, I received the wrong item, or there is another issue with the delivery?

If you notice an issue with your order, please contact us immediately. Include the delivery date, a description of the issue(s), and clear photos of any damage, incorrect items, or other issues. Lastly, notate the damages or errors on the shippers BOL before signing. We will assist you with resolving the issue as quickly as possible.
