Discover the Essence of Nepalese Coffee
The rich soil of the Himalayas provides opportunity for lush, biodiverse, landscapes ripe for healthy coffee cultivation. The ecosystems preserved on coffee farms around Nepal produce a quality product you can be proud of offering to your consumers with a clean conscience.
Ecological sustainability has been woven into the fabric of Nepal’s specialty coffee production. The Himalayas provide mineral rich soils and a lush ecosystem just right for coffee to flourish.
Nepal has long restricted growing robusta, which has built a strong understanding and commitment to quality-grown arabica.
Rather than large estates, most of Nepal’s coffee farming is done in community, where a focus on empowering women farm owners has encouraged a broader community development and advancement.

A cool climate, high altitude, mineral rich soil, and ideal water runoff make conditions in Nepal ideal for growing specialty arabica. Regenerative or organic farming practices have been in place from the start of the quality movement, so that communities can preserve the rich environment conducive to long term production. Direct connection and producer transparency have also aided greater sustainability in the Nepali coffee market.

We are widening our offerings with the support of our friends at Khetipati Organics. The most common varieties produced include Pacamara, Bourbon, Typica, Caturra and Catimor.
Although you can find experimental (anaerobic) processes being used, the widest selections of microlots are typically fully washed or naturally processed. We have found the washed process to have great floral, tea and chocolatey elements.
Harvest for specialty arabica in Nepal typically begins in December-January and is ready for export from March to April. There is a limited supply in Nepal of exportable coffee so we recommend beginning your planning early and forward book early in the harvest cycle.
A Different Kind of Mountain Coffee
Nepal's coffee cultivation starts with exceptional geography. Unlike other mountain-grown coffees, Nepal's terroir is shaped by the dramatic Himalayan elevations, where coffee thrives above 1,000 meters.
A Different Kind of Mountain Coffee
Nepal's coffee cultivation starts with exceptional geography. Unlike other mountain-grown coffees, Nepal's terroir is shaped by the dramatic Himalayan elevations, where coffee thrives above 1,000 meters. The government's commitment to quality is evident in their active decision to prohibit robusta varieties, maintaining the region's specialty status and ensuring only premium arabica flourishes in the pristine mountain air and mineral-rich soils.
These unique environmental factors translate directly to the cup. Nepali coffees surprise even experienced cupping professionals with their distinctive combination of delicate florals, deep chocolate notes, and compelling nutty complexity—a true taste of the Himalayas.
Writing Their Own Rules
Nepal's coffee story stands apart through its modern emergence. While other regions carry centuries of tradition, Nepal's coffee sector has developed in the specialty era, allowing producers to embrace current best practices while innovating their own approaches.
The Tea and Coffee Development Board's commitment to fair trade is evident in their minimum pricing structure for different grades and processing stages. This system ensures transparency and ethical sourcing, giving roasters confidence in their partnerships while allowing premium prices for exceptional quality.
Quality Through Community
Nepal's coffee sector thrives on collaboration rather than large estates. Production centers around community-based farming, with knowledge and resources shared among producers. This structure naturally incentivizes quality improvement as farmers work together to elevate their region's reputation.
Despite yields averaging just one-fourth of commercial cultivation in India and elsewhere due to the challenging terrain, farmers have turned this limitation into an advantage. Most practice integrated farming, cultivating complementary crops like ginger, turmeric, banana, oranges, mandarins, avocados, and sweet chestnuts alongside their coffee—creating sustainable, diverse agricultural systems.
Innovation in Adversity
The challenges facing Nepali coffee producers have sparked remarkable innovations. Dealing with unique climate pressures has led to resilient farming practices that could prove valuable as other regions face similar challenges. The necessity of protecting delicate mountain ecosystems has resulted in naturally sustainable approaches to cultivation.
Building Trust Through Scale
The moderate size of Nepal's coffee sector has become a strength. The scale allows for remarkable transparency, enabling direct relationships between producers and roasters. These partnerships create opportunities for knowledge exchange, quality improvement, and fair value distribution throughout the supply chain.
For roasters, this means unprecedented access to their coffee's journey. Rather than anonymous lots, Nepal offers direct connections with the farmers shaping specialty coffee's future in the Himalayas. The fact that premium coffee is primarily exported creates unique opportunities for international roasters to access these exceptional beans.
The Path Forward
For roasters seeking meaningful partnerships, Nepal's coffee sector offers more than exceptional coffee—it provides an opportunity to participate in a transformation that encompasses:
- Agricultural Innovation: Supporting sustainable mountain coffee cultivation
- Community Development: Contributing to economic growth that preserves traditional communities
- Quality Evolution: Participating in the development of unique processing approaches
- Market Creation: Establishing new models for direct trade relationships
Looking ahead, Nepal's coffee story is still being written. Yet the foundation being built—of quality, sustainability, and direct relationships—suggests an exciting future. For roasters ready to be part of this journey, Nepal offers not just exceptional coffee, but the chance to build proud, lasting partnerships that transform both businesses and communities.
