Nestled in Kirinyaga County on the southern slopes of Mt. Kenya, the Nyanja Factory lies near the town of Kianaga. In Kenya, wet mills are commonly referred to as ""factories,"" and Nyanja is one of 12 such facilities operated by the Baragwi Farmers’ Cooperative Society (FCS). Established in 1953, the Baragwi FCS now represents 11,791 smallholder members, each cultivating coffee on their own individual farms. The cooperative provides crucial support to these farmers, including processing services at its network of factories, as well as agricultural training and extension services aimed at improving productivity and coffee quality.
The Process
Process: Fully washed with double fermentation Before processing, cherries are carefully hand-sorted to ensure only the ripest are selected. The factory uses an Agaarde disc pulping machine to remove the skin and pulp from the cherries. After pulping, the coffee is density graded, allowing only the highest quality beans to move forward in the process.
