Nestled in Kirinyaga County on the southern slopes of Mt. Kenya, the Nyanja Factory lies near the town of Kianaga. In Kenya, wet mills are commonly referred to as ""factories,"" and Nyanja is one of 12 such facilities operated by the Baragwi Farmers’ Cooperative Society (FCS). Established in 1953, the Baragwi FCS now represents 11,791 smallholder members, each cultivating coffee on their own individual farms. The cooperative provides crucial support to these farmers, including processing services at its network of factories, as well as agricultural training and extension services aimed at improving productivity and coffee quality.
The Process
Gachami employs a traditional Kenya-style washed process with double fermentation, utilizing fresh water sourced from local rivers. This meticulous approach results in a high level of clarity, acidity, and flavor complexity in the cup. Cherries are hand-harvested, carefully sorted to ensure optimal ripeness, and depulped using an Agaarde disc pulper. Beans are then graded by density, separating top-quality lots before undergoing the fermentation, washing, and drying stages. The factory’s location at 1,800 MASL and the region’s fertile volcanic soils provide ideal growing conditions for SL28 and SL34, with small quantities of other cultivars also present.
