About the Producer
Produced at the Kieni Factory, part of the Mugaga Farmers’ Cooperative Society, this coffee reflects the meticulous craftsmanship of roughly 900–1,000 smallholder farmers. Situated at elevations of 1,600 to 1,800 meters above sea level, the factory benefits from the region’s cool climate and fertile volcanic soils—ideal for cultivating high-quality Arabica. Many farmers also practice intercropping, planting bananas alongside coffee trees to enhance biodiversity and soil fertility.
The Process
Kieni is processed using Kenya’s renowned washed method with double fermentation, which enhances the coffee’s clarity, brightness, and distinctive fruit profile. The main harvest season runs from November to December, during which only fully ripe cherries are handpicked for processing.
